As members of the Laudato Si Ministry our job this year is to help lead and support our
school in ‘Living Laudato Si in 2023’. We look forward to sharing many initiatives and
activities that will make us all more aware of and care for our common home.
As part of our ‘Living Laudato Si in 2023’ we have decided to support the foundation ‘Bread
Tags for Wheelchairs’. This foundation collects plastic bread tags in Australia. The tags are
recycled locally, raising funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people, mainly in South
Africa.
Here are some interesting facts:
- The foundation has purchased 72 wheelchairs
- 8,841 kg of Aussie bread tags have been recycled
- That’s a total of 250kg of bread tags a month
- That’s approximately 2,700 bread tags per kg.
Once the foundation receives the tags, they have volunteers who then sort the tags into
colours. These special volunteers are call ‘Colour Sorters’ . The coloured tags are then
repurposed, melted down and used to create new products such as bowls, serving platters
and chopping boards.
We are excited to support the Bread tags for Wheelchairs Foundation and ask that you
collect plastic bread tags and bring them into school. Please note that some bread tags are
cardboard, and we don’t want those ones. We would like plastic tags only. You can find
these tags on products such as bread, pikelets, bread rolls, bagels and hot cross buns.
We look forward to counting your bread tag donations so please start collecting bread tags
and bring them in and pop them into the box that will be located in the front office.
Many thanks,
